Renewable Fuels Guide 2023

Project Summary

Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) are responsible for 20% of UK road transport GHG emissions, with long-haul trucks being one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonise. Zemo Partnership’s study on Market Opportunities to decarbonise HDVs identified a variety of interventions which could help accelerate the adoption of high blend renewable fuel in HGVs by fleet operators and tackle market barriers. The Renewable Fuels Guide will explore a range of interventions to help increase the take up of high blend renewable fuels in HGVs, focusing on biodiesel and renewable paraffinic fuels, and biomethane.

Objectives

• To prepare a proposal for Government setting out a fiscal incentive framework to stimulate the adoption for higher blends of renewable diesel in HDVs and NRMM equipment.  

• To update the Zemo Renewable Fuels Guide and make it accessible across the HGV community.  

• To explore opportunities for increasing HGV refuelling infrastructure sites to accommodate higher blends of renewable diesel.  

Actions and Achievements

• Published the Renewable Fuels Guide and accompanying Appendix

• Promoted the use of renewable fuels in the Heavy Duty Vehicle market by hosting a series of webinars, including "The Role of Renewable Fuels in HGV Fleets" webinar with over 160 registrants.
