Accelerating Transport to Zero Emissions
We explore measures to increase the adoption of sustainable low carbon fuels such as biofuels and renewable hydrogen.
Raising awareness of the benefits of renewable fuels while recognising organisations who have adopted low carbon fuels could play an important role in influencing wider market adoption in the HDV sector. Zemo Partnership plans to introduce a Transport Fleet Operator ‘Renewable Fuel Commitment’ initiative to demonstrate best practice.
The Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme is an initiative designed and managed by Zemo Partnership that aims to give fleet operators independent assurance of purchasing sustainable, low carbon fuels approved under the RTFO, and customer supply chain specific GHG emission performance data.
The UK’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) sets out the minimum trajectory for low carbon fuels to 2032, with a target of 12.5% renewable transport fuel. The Department for Transport will review the RTFO in 2021 and explore options for accelerating GHG emissions reductions associated with low carbon fuels supplied in the UK.
Aligning the fuel requirements of future propulsion systems with advanced, future fuels is a considerable and complex challenge in terms of research and development (R&D). This project represents a continuation of the Transport Energy Network (‘TEN’) collaboration between the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), Brighton University and Zemo Partnership.
Whilst renewable transport fuels have a range of robust criteria to meet, the failure to harmonise GHG and sustainability criteria across different sectors in the bio-economy can result in market distortions and unintended environmental consequences.
There is increasing interest in the role of hydrogen as an energy vector with potential for contributing to the decarbonisation of road transport and, in particular, heavy-duty vehicles.
Raising the proportion of ethanol in petrol from the current limit of 5% to 10% (E10) has the potential to significantly reduce emissions from road transport.

There is no better time to join our partnership for change. Join us and help shape the future.
For the past 18 years we've played a pivotal role successfully delivering the UK's low emission transport targets.
But the growing climate emergency means low is no longer enough.
Now, embracing a wider range of stakeholders to achieve a zero emissions future is what matters.
Today, we are strengthening our commitment to make change happen faster and accelerate transport to zero emissions.
Now, the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership is relaunching as Zemo Partnership. #fromLowtoZero
