Description:

This conference is intended to provide transport practitioners from central and local government and the wider public transport sector with an opportunity to come together to share their knowledge and experiences and to examine new and emerging practice within the sector.

The Eddington Transport Study made clear that reliable, efficient and modern transport networks are crucial to the UK's continued economic performance and competitiveness.

Using case-studies, presentations, and open and interactive panel debates, speakers at the conference will discuss key issues affecting the modernisation of the UK’s transport network. They will examine and evaluate:

  • the impact of the Comprehensive Spending Review 2007 on levels of investment for future transport infrastructure programmes;
  • the Private Finance Initiative as a means to meeting the cost of modernising the UK's transport network;
  • strategies and policies to accelerate the provision of a modern, sustainable and integrated transport system;
  • whether local government has sufficient powers to shape local transport networks and local economies effectively;
  • new and sustainable approaches to regional and local transport planning and to what extent the Transport Innovation Fund promotes and rewards new thinking on transport matters;
  • the introduction of congestion-charging schemes throughout the UK and how they compare to those introduced across Europe;
  • the success of the latest technologies to safeguard passengers against the threat posed by terrorism and improve the performance of the transport network given the projected rise in passenger numbers.
