Description:

A one-day conference initiated by Transport 2000 examining how better urban design can improve the liveability and walkability of our cities. The programme will cover the vision, key building blocks, best practice and the impact of traffic on communities.  At the launch of the Manual for Streets on 29 March 2007 the Minister, Gillian Merron MP, said: "We want to see more people using the street. People talking, and socialising. The more this happens, the safer people feel; the more they feel part of a community; and the more neighbours look out for each other; so crime rates fall".  The dominance of our cities by the car causes excess carbon emissions, congestion and a poor living environment. Better urban design has a major role to play. Transport 2000 has initiated a one-day conference, organized by Waterfront, to examine how better urban design can improve the liveability and walkability of our cities. The programme is divided into the following four sections: the vision, European models, evolving good practice and traffic and local communities.
