Environmental Protection UK Annual Conference

This year marks 60 years since the Clean Air Acts, legislation that tackled the devastating impacts of the great smogs of the 1950’s. EPUK campaigned for this legislation (as the National Society for Clean Air), as EPUK continues to push for robust environmental legislation and programmes to protect human health, in the light of uncertainty around Brexit. EPUK is marking this significant milestone by looking back and ahead, to consider the opportunities and challenges for environmental protection from the current situation and the future to provide health protection for all in the UK.

Professor Frank Kelly, Environmental Research Group, Kings College, London, will open the conference with an overview of the current state of health protection from air pollution and what must be done to deliver real improvements. Dr Jill Meara, PHE Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards, will introduce the second part of the afternoon plenary session by describing the approach to managing health risks from environmental pollution. Graham Jukes, who has recently retired as the Chief Executive of the CIEH, will give a closing presentation on the current and potential future roles of local authorities. Lord Whitty, EP-UK President, will be introducing a session on environmental protection outside the EU. LowCVP's Head of Projects Gloria Esposito will address the conference on 'Encouraging the take-up of low emission vehicles'.
