Description:

Following the success of the Energy Management for Defence Infrastructure, RUSI will be holding the second workshop in the Alternative Energy and Sustainability series on 23 September 2009, titled ‘Alternative Fuels and Energy Resources’.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) uses one billion litres of aviation, automotive and marine fuel every year, and it procures additional fuel through NATO for operations in Afghanistan of which over 100,000 litres of fuel is transported to Camp Bastion each day. Indeed, many of the UK personnel recently killed or injured in Helmand province were transporting fuel or protecting convoys, therefore reducing fuel consumption and adopting alternative fuel technologies could save lives.

This workshop will consider the MoD’s fuel strategy and initiatives to certify alternative fuels for use on military platforms. It will also examine alternative fuels, hydrogen technologies and hybrid options developed for the aviation, maritime and motor industries along with their applications to the defence sector and implications for both military capability and the supply chain. Speakers will discuss the latest developments in battery technologies and applications for the dismounted soldier. The event will include contributions from the MoD, the US Army, vehicle and fuel trade associations and industry representatives.
