Winner of Eco-marathon nears 10,000mpg.

A French team has won the Shell Eco-Marathon, held at Rockingham Motor Speedway, Corby, with a vehicle achieving an average fuel consumption of 9,737 miles per gallon.

The aim of the Shell Eco-Marathon was for competitors to build a vehicle meeting required safety standards and to run it round a circuit using the least fuel possible. at an average speed of more than 15mph.

The first Shell Eco-Marathon winner, in the 1970s was barely able to travel 1,000 miles per gallon.

This year's winning team, Microjoule, beat another French team, Team Callo, into second place with a winning margin of nearly 3,000mpg.
