Warm Homes Plan aims to electrify domestic heating, encourage home power generation

The UK Government has unveiled a £15 billion Warm Homes Plan which is designed to support uptake of heat pumps, solar photovoltaic installations, battery storage and smart controls as central technologies to reduce energy costs and emissions. The Plan's emphasis on the electrification of domestic heating is likely to enable significant new opportunities for car makers, energy service providers and their customers.

The combination of solar, battery storage and smart controls as central technologies to reduce household energy costs have the potential to dovetail well with the economics of electric vehicle charging. By significantly expanding access to rooftop solar and paired storage through grants and zero/low-interest loans, the Plan enhances the business case for owners to generate and store their own electricity. For EV drivers charging at home, this could mean having access to self-sourced energy to power vehicles as well as providing new opportunities for EV owners to use their vehicles' batteries for power to support home heating and other domestic uses, potentially at significantly lower cost.

Energy storage and smart controls embedded as part of the Plan’s retrofit packages allow EV charging to be optimised around household generation and low-cost periods, enabling householders to maximise the benefits from time-of-use tariffs. Smart charging platforms and vehicle-to-home integrations become far more attractive when supported by in-home generation and storage for which the Government will be providing subsidies.

For EV manufacturers, chargepoint installers, and energy service providers, the Warm Homes Plan will unlock new opportunities to accelerate the electrification of transport by taking advantage of the synergies with the electrification of home heating.
