Volvo announces plans to mass produce hybrid trucks

Volvo says it will begin mass production of energy efficient hybrid diesel-electric truck engines in 2009. The engine can cut fuel consumption by 35% the makers claim.

Volvo say that the biggest benefits will come when the vehicle is used on routes with frequent braking and acceleration, for example in vehicles used for refuse collection, city bus traffic and city distribution. In addition to much improved fuel economy, they also claim that there will be reduced wear on the braking system.

With fuel prices at current levels, Volvo says that the higher purchase price will be paid back through lower fuel costs.

President and CEO of Volvo, Leif Johansson said: "Production volumes will to a great extent depend on the oil price. If the oil price stays at the current level or rises I am convinced that this product will have a major impact.".

Volvo, which is the second-largest maker of trucks in the world, says it has spent around $50m developing the product so far.
