US business calls for federal standards on greenhouse emissions

US utilities, manufacturers and investors are calling on the federal government to set clear US-wide standards for greenhouse gas emissions in order that they can better plan future strategies, according to a report in the International Herald Tribune.

A spokesman for Cinergy, a Cincinatti-based utility said: "We want this issue addressed sooner rather than later because we have to start building new power plants...It's tough to move into a billion-dollar-plus building programme without knowing the rules of the road."

The US Government is under pressure from UK and other leaders to participate in international initiatives on climate change in advance of next month's G8 summit.
