Production at the UK's first large-scale biodiesel plant, near Motherwell in Scotland, began recently. The £16m Argent Energy plant should produce 4.2 million litres of biodiesel a month.
Current UK sales of biodiesel are only about 1.8 million litres per month - less than 0.1 per cent of total diesel sales.
Under a contract between Argent and Petroplus, biodiesel product made from waste cooking oil and tallow will go to refineries in Grangemouth and Teesside where it will be blended with mineral diesel. The 95 per cent mineral diesel to 5 per cent biodiesel blend will be on sale, as Bio-plus.
