UK ministers opt for hybrid vehicles

The UK Government Car and Despatch Agency is encouraging ministers to adopt hybrid vehicles by offering them as an alternative to vehicles using traditional technology.

So far, eight government ministers have taken delivery of a Toyota Prius hybrid, including environment minister Elliot Morley.

The Car and Despatch Agency also recently announced that it is running its central London van fleet - the InterDespatch Service - on a 5% biodiesel/ultra-low sulphur diesel mix.

Meanwhile, Honda have announced that sales of hybrid IMA (integrated motor assist) models have passed the 100,000 mark since they were launched six years ago.

The USA accounts for almost 90% of Honda's worldwide IMA sales. Over 27,000 Insight, Civic and Accord IMAs were sold in the US alone last year. The UK is the largest European market, accounting for around a half of all IMAs (mainly Civics) sold to date.
