The Low Carbon Future Leaders placement scheme, driven by Backing Young Britain and run by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, has been launched to create 1,500 graduate jobs to help support the low carbon vehicle and marine energy sector.

These emerging industries are expected to provide significant employment opportunities in the future and the scheme aims to get talented graduates into the low carbon sectors of these industries in order to grow with the sector. The scheme should see graduates working with businesses to help raise awareness of technological developments and new business opportunities.

Commenting on the scheme, the Minister of State for Higher Education David Lammy said:  “Our young people are key to the UK’s future success in winning the jobs of the future, which is why we have created the Future Leaders initiative. This will give graduates opportunities in a fast growing and increasingly important industry, improving their future job prospects while providing businesses with their specialist knowledge and skills.”

Mr Lammy added that Backing Young Britain does not only aim to help young people into work, it will also improve the skills of the emerging workforce as an investment in the future UK economy.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) will be working with universities and regional partners to determine the most effective way of implementing the initiative.
