Zero emission trucks being delivered to Amazon, Royal Mail and Tarmac, amongst others, show there are signs of progress in cutting emissions from the hard-to-tackle heavy duty commercial vehicle sector. Total registrations of zero emission trucks more than quadrupled year-on-year during the third quarter of 2025, according to SMMT data, securing a record 2.4% market share. The UK is now the second largest zero emission HGV market by volume in Europe, trailing only Germany.
Amazon has begun receiving deliveries of 160 electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600s which will be used to transport products between Amazon’s logistics depots across the UK. Amazon says that, with a 500km range, the trucks are able to transport up to 22 metric tons per journey made between fulfilment centres, sort centres, and delivery hubs. The company has installed fast chargers at these sites to support their deployment, including 360kW fast chargers.
Meanwhile, Royal Mail has rolled out the first eight electric heavy goods vehicles which will be deployed at its Midlands and north-west parcel hubs. The eight DAF 42-tonne XD 350E electric HGVs will operate around the clock, handling ‘middle-mile’ deliveries between parcel hubs and mail centres. Each vehicle will be powered by ABB’s T360 chargers, capable of adding up to 60 miles of range in under 15 minutes. Royal Mail has installed high-speed chargers at its two parcel hubs in Daventry and Warrington, thanks to its membership of the Electric Freightway programme.
Tarmac has also announced plans to launch a fleet of eHGVs for transporting cement, asphalt, aggregates and concrete blocks alongside a new electric charging network to support the delivery of materials for construction and major infrastructure projects across London and the South East. Five new vehicles from Renault Trucks and DAF Trucks will be the first to transport these construction materials. The new eHGVs and charging network are being supported by the government’s Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Development (ZEHID) programme, backed by £200 million in funding from the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.
