UK data shows year-on-year improvements in GHG savings from biofuels

Data for biofuels delivered to the UK market shows that greenhouse gas savings compared to fossil fuels have improved year-on-year since the obligation to report data was introduced in 2008-9. Unverified data for 2011-12 suggests a further improvement. However, the statistics exclude emissions from indirect land use change (iluc).

In response to a parliamentary question from shadow transport secretary Maria Eagle, the minister Norman Baker said that verified data for obligation years 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 suggest that 46%, 51% and 57% greenhouse gas savings compared to fossil fuels were achieved respectively in those obligation years. Unverified data for obligation year 2011-12 suggest that 62% greenhouse gas savings would be achieved in respect of fuel reported to the RTFO Administrator between April and December 2011. These figures exclude emissions from indirect land use changes.

The LowCVP provided the methodology for carbon and sustainability reporting which was adopted by the UK Government under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) which determines the quantity of biofuels that will be supplied to the UK market.
