UK Car buyers seek to save by 'going green'

Research by Tescocompare.com, the car insurance comparison site, found that 2 million motorists claim to be driving an environmentally friendly car. The survey revealed that lower emission vehicles are most popular in Wales and the South West, where 12% have chosen a car which is 'environmentally friendly' compared to 4% in London.

Paul Baxter of Tescocompare.com concluded the research clearly shows the nation’s motorists are much more likely to go green if it saves them money as well as saving the planet.  He said: "The message that the British driver is sending to the government is empathetic – they are happy to embrace green driving but want to be rewarded for doing so. Penalising them for not being green is much less of an incentive."

The research is further supported by a What Car? magazine survey which indicated just under 50 per cent of car buyers said they would be buying an environmentally friendly car for financial reasons, while only 19 per cent said environmental issues would be their main motivation.
