The latest SMMT Annual Report on "UK New Car Registrations by CO2 Performance" shows continued reductions in fleet average CO2 emissions. Three percent of all new cars registered in 2003 had CO2 emissions below 120g/km and almost 15% were under 140g/km.
The report quotes the growth in diesel cars, a shift to superminis as well as the wider introduction of improved diesel and smaller and lighter vehicles at the larger end of the market as the main factors behind the continued improvements.
However, the SMMT figures also show that the UK is behind other EU countries in new car CO2 reductions and will need to see greater annual improvements to approach the target levels of 140 g/km CO2 set by the EU Voluntary Agreements.
