Uber announces fares levy to help drivers switch to electric vehicles in London

Uber has announced that it will introduce a 'clean air fee' of of 15p per mile for every trip booked through the Uber app in London. The proceeds, says Uber, will go towards helping drivers upgrade to an electric vehicle as well as other clean air initiatives. It aims for every car using the Uber app in the capital to be fully electric by 2025. Meanwhile the company has also announced what it is calling a $10m fund for sustainable mobility.
Uber says it expects to raise more than £200m to support drivers transitioning to electric vehicles over the next few years and that every driver using the app in London will be able to get assistance to help them transition to an electric car. The amount of support drivers will receive towards the cost of an electric vehicle will be based on the number of miles they have driven on the app. A driver using the app for an average of 40 hours per week could expect around £3,000 of support towards an EV in two years’ time and £4,500 in three years, the company says.
For customers, Uber says that on an average trip in London, the 'clean air fee' will amount to around 45p.
Meanwhile, Uber has also announced a £10m fund for sustainable mobility which will be based on the Shared Mobility Principles for Liveable Cities, developed by leading international NGOs in sustainable transport.
Uber says it plans to put its energy behind congestion pricing, which it says "is viewed by urban planners, transit advocates, and academics as the single best way to ease the road congestion that is choking many cities across the globe".
