Transport for London is to trial 20 new plug-in hybrid Ford Transit Custom Vans as part of a new initiative supported by a £4.7m grant from the Advanced Propulsion Centre. The initiative will launch in the autumn of this year and aims to help improve air quality in the capital.

The project will see a cross-section of London’s commercial fleets trialling the new PHEV Transits to explore how they can not only contribute to cleaner air targets, but also boost productivity in challenging urban conditions.

London’s commercial vehicles currently make 280,000 journeys on a typical weekday, travelling a total distance of eight million miles and representing 75% of peak freight traffic.

The Transit Custom PHEV vans in the London trial can be charged with mains electricity. They feature an efficient on-board combustion engine for longer journeys requiring extended range.

Ford plans the introduction of 13 new electric global models over the next five years and will be using a telematics system to collect data on the vehicles’ financial, operational and environmental performance to help understand how the benefits of electrified vehicles can be maximised.

The LowCVP is working closely with Transport for London's (TfL) LoCITY initiative which has been set up to reduce the emissions of London's freight and fleet operators. LowCVP, amongst other activities, is helping to ensure that LoCITY is closely linked-in with UK-wide support for low emission commercial vehicles. (See related news story.)
