The House of Commons Transport Select Committee has announced that it will undertake an inquiry into low carbon vehicles. The influential Committee, which comprises a cross-party group of MPs chaired by Louise Ellman MP will look, in particular, at the potential for plug-in vehicles to contribute to decarbonising transport and Government action to facilitate this.
The Committee's announcement notes that over 90% of the UK’s domestic transport emissions come from road transport and says that low carbon vehicles offer a potential means by which road transport can be decarbonised. The Government says that it expects to see tens of thousands of plug-in vehicles on the roads by 2015 as part of its Plug-In Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy.
In its call for evidence, the Committee says that it is particularly interested in hearing evidence about:
- The contribution of plug-in vehicles to decarbonising transport.
- Uptake of plug-in vehicles and how this can be improved.
- The effectiveness of the Plugged-In Places scheme.
- The role of plug-in vehicles alongside other technologies in cutting CO2 from road transport.
- Action taken by other countries to encourage the uptake of plug-in vehicles.
The deadline for written evidence is Monday 16 April.
