Environmental campaign organisation Transport 2000 has renewed its call for ‘Top Gear’ to be taken off BBC schedules and replaced with a new programme promoting ‘sensible driving in sensible vehicles’. The organisation has written to the BBC2 controller seeking a meeting to discuss campaigners’ concerns.

A spokesman for Transport 2000 said: “Everyone is talking about how to reduce car use, cut climate change emissions and make the roads safer but, to quote in perhaps its own language, Top Gear effectively sticks up two fingers to this. There is a strong danger that it encourages irresponsible motorist behaviour and therefore has no place in public service broadcasting.”

The argument between the pressure group and the BBC programme has been simmering for some time. Transport 2000 have issued a number of press releases criticising many aspects of the show’s presentation.
