Toyota and BMW collaborate with Repsol and Bosch to test viability of renewable fuels

A fleet of vehicles from Toyota and BMW will be used in a six month pilot project to test the viability of renewable fuels. Also involving Bosch and Repsol, the pilot will take place in Spain.
Toyota says that the project aims to demonstrate the real-world potential of what they term Vehicles running Exclusively on Eligible Fuels (VEEF). VEEF are renewable and low carbon fuels that comply with EU sustainability criteria under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and which deliver significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions on a well-to-wheel basis compared to fossil fuels. These fuels include sustainably produced biofuels and renewable fuels derived from waste, residues or renewable energy sources.
Pascal Ruch, vice president corporate and governmental affairs, Toyota Motor Europe, said: “We believe renewable fuels can play a key role alongside electrification in reducing CO2 emissions.
"This pilot aims to demonstrate how renewable fuels can make a meaningful and sustainable contribution to decarbonisation today, for both new and existing vehicles.”
Unlike solutions that require new vehicle technologies or infrastructure investments, the project uses unmodified Toyota, Lexus and BMW vehicles to demonstrate the immediate scalability of renewable fuels as a drop-in solution for decarbonising road transport.
