Toyota aims to double number of hybrid models and quadruple sales

Toyota aims to quadruple current sales of hybrid vehicles by doubling the number of hybrid models available - from the current seven - within ten years.

The Daily Telegraph reports Toyota's President, Katsuaki Watanabe as saying: "We will lead the global market by regarding hybrids as the core technology to solve the environment issue."

He said that Toyota aims to increase hybrid car sales from 235,000 units to 1m in the years soon after 2010.

An on-line public poll run by the Daily Telegraph found that 62% of people responded 'yes' to the question: "Would you buy a hybrid car" while 38% said 'no'.
