Increased energy consumption in 2004 meant that the UK's carbon dioxide emissions rose by about 1.5% compared with 2003. According to environmental campaigners, the rise continued for the first five months of 2005.

Provisional data published in the UK Digest of Energy Statistics showed that the 2004 increase was mainly due to stronger energy demand in various sectors - including road transport - combined with a fall in the output of nuclear electricity.

The Financial Times also reported that, according to an analysis by Friends of the Earth, UK emissions of carbon dioxide have increased by a further 1.8% in the first 5 months of 2005, compared with the same period last year.

Between 1990 and 2004 the demand for energy from the transport sector (including aviation) has increased by 18%. Industrial energy demand fell around 12% over the same period, but domestic demand grew by around 19.5%.
