TfL unveils new hybrid bus fleet for London

Transport for London has introduced a range of new, single and double decker hybrid buses; the first stage of what is planned to be a signifcant increase in London’s hybrid bus fleet. TfL says that by January 2009, 56 hybrid buses will be on the road in London, with a further 300 to be in operation by 2011. TfL claims that each new bus will deliver a 40% CO2 saving.
London's Mayor, Boris Johnson, said: 'A wonderful alliance of fuel efficiency and fume deficiency make hybrid engines the way to go for buses in our city."
Bus manufacturers have responded to London's commitment by developing hybrid buses especially for the London fleet. Alexander Dennis, Volvo and Optare have produced their first hybrid buses for London, while Wrightbus has produced a new double-deck hybrid. The buses will be identifiable by their 'green leaf' livery.
The Mayor's Director of Transport Policy, Kulveer Ranger also said: "With bus ridership rocketing it is vital our buses are as clean and green as possible. The trial of new hybrid buses is a further step towards that aim and will mean we can be sure that we get the best buses possible for Londoners
Transport for London has indicated that by 2012 every new bus entering the fleet will be a hybrid.
