TfL to introduce more hydrogen fuel cell buses to London

Tue 13 November 2007 View all news

A fleet of 10 hydrogen fuel cell buses worth nearly £10m has been bought by Transport for London to operate on the London transport network. The fleet, which will be the biggest of its kind in Europe, will be operated by FirstGroup on behalf of Transport for London.

The buses will come into service by 2010 and will produce no tail-pipe pollution. Funding of £2.6m has been provided by the Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR) for London's programme.

The announcement follows a trial of hydrogen-powered buses which started in January 2004 and the London Hydrogen Transport programme announced by the Mayor in February 2006. The Mayor has set a target for 5% of all public sector fleet vehicles to be powered by hydrogen by 2015.

The suppliers, US-based ISE, will work with a number of sub-contractors, including LowCVP members The Wright Group, and Canadian fuel cell makers Ballard.
