A survey commissioned by charging infrastructure provider Chargemaster revealed that 58% of UK respondents who said that they are planning to buy a new car over the next two years would consider choosing an electric option. The figure increased to 81 per cent of respondents who live in London.

The research conducted by Aurora Market Research showed that drivers in younger age groups were more likely to express interest in buying an electric car.

One of the key areas of concern for potential electric car buyers was the lack of a national charging infrastructure, with 83 per cent of people surveyed saying this would negatively affect their decision.

David Martell, chief executive of Chargemaster, said: ‘With a number of major car manufacturers close to launching and promoting their EV ranges to the mass market, it is has become increasingly clear that consumers are now seriously considering purchasing an EV.'

Demand for electric vehicles has been slow over the last year, particularly taking into the account the launch of the Government'sPlug-in car grant in early 2011 with only 1,052 EVs registered - of which 892 made grant claims - by 31 December 2011 according to Department for Transport figures.

The Chargemaster survey sampled 1032 people across the UK.
