Over 70% of the UK public favour the introduction of higher car fuel efficiency standards, even if this means that car prices rise according to a survey of public opinion around the world.

In all ten of the countries polled (mainly the larger economies), a majority of respondents either 'strongly' or 'somewhat' favoured the introduction of higher fuel efficiency standards even if car prices rose.

The findings are one element of a poll - involving 30 countries -which finds that a large majority (90%) of people in all the countries polled believe that climate change is a serious problem.

The surveys, of 33,237 people from all major regions of the world, were conducted by GlobeScan Incorporated between October 2005 and January 2006.

In only three countries did less than 80% of people polled disagree that climate change is a serious problem. These were: The United States - 76%, South Africa - 72% and Kenya - 65%.
