Bus operator Stagecoach has promised to spend £70 million on 400 new low emission buses in Manchester if the Government decides to accept the city's transport funding bid.

Stagecoach, which recently took over the running of Manchester's Metrolink service, has said it will spend the money on the new buses, in addition to the £15 million recently spent on a 100-strong fleet of new low-emission vehicles.

Manchester has made a submission to the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) which comes under the auspices of the Department for Transport.

If the bid is successful, Manchester will receive £1.2 billion in TIF grants and a further £1.8 billion in loans to be repaid with congestion charge revenues.
