Smith Electric Vehicles - based in North-East England - is providing a fleet of ten Edison vans to Ford of Europe which is a partner in a German project set up to examine the potential benefits of operating commercial electric vehicles. The Cologne-based project will help to inform Germany's stated plans to deploy one million zero emission vehicles by 2020.

The Smith Edison is a pure electric version of the Ford Transit van, powered by leading edge lithium-ion batteries. Designed for urban operations, the vehicle delivers a range of up to 100 miles (160km) on a full charge and a top speed of 50mph (80km/h) Smith has produced Edison in collaboration with Ford since 2007.

Kevin Harkin, Sales Director for Smith Electric Vehicles, said: "We believe that commercial electric vehicles have a major role to play in low carbon transport and are confident this research project will reach the same conclusions."

Note: Kevin Harkin will be one of the speakers at a LowCVP seminar on the practical aspects of operating electric vehicles to be held as part of base 2010 at the ExCel Centre, London on March 17. (See associated link for more details.)
