Shell Springboard provides funding to UK entrepreneurs at the cutting-edge of the low-carbon economy. In 2015 funding awards of up to £150,000 (and a total of £350k) are available for small enterprises with innovative, commercially viable business ideas that will reduce carbon emissions. The deadline for entries is December 5.

Since launching in 2005 the programme has awarded approximately £3 million to 80 start-up enterprises over the past ten years with previous winners including fuel cell pioneer Cella Energy and coffee waste to biofuel specialist Bio-bean.

Shell says that theideas coming out of these small businesses are not only helping to create a lower carbon, higher energy future – they are creating a new wave of jobs and growth.

A LowCVP study - 'Investing in the Low Carbon Journey' - published earlier this year, found that the UK automotive sector has indeed been revitalised by consistently applied policy centred on cutting carbon.

For the first time, one overall winner will take away £150,000 – while 5 further finalists will receive £40,000 each.

"The dynamic enterprises Shell Springboard supports are helping to create a lower carbon, higher energy future, as well as creating a new wave of jobs and economic growth," said Erik Bonino, chairman of Shell UK, in a statement.

"A study by Shell Springboard and the Carbon Trust found that low-carbon SMEs could unlock £30bn in exports by 2020. The quality of applications to Shell Springboard is always high, and I'm looking forward to seeing the great business ideas in this year's programme."
