Sales of 4x4 vehicles show falls in 2006

Sales of 4x4 vehicles fell sharply in the UK according to the latest statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Sales fell by over 5% in the first 10 months of 2006 after rising by nearly 18% between 2003 and 2005.

However, the SMMT said that most of the fall was due to two best-selling 4x4 models - the Land Rover Discovery and the Honda CR-V -  being replaced with new models which are yet to come on to the market.

There was speculation in some sections of the media that the sales fall was, at least partly, due to the campaign against 4x4s by some environmental groups and a result of changes in road tax rates and other charges expected to be introduced by the Government and local authorities.
