Road transport CO2 emissions becoming de-linked from GDP growth

Tue 02 May 2006 View all news

Total carbon dioxide emissions from all UK road transport rose by 10% between 1990 and 2003 compared with a 39% increase in GDP according to Transport Trends 2005 which is recently published by the Department for Transport. Nevertheless, the share of road transport in total UK emissions has risen over the period.

Carbon dioxide emissions from all road transport were roughly in line with GDP growth until 1993, but since then have grown more slowly.

The report shows an encouraging trend in emissions of local pollutants. Since 1990, emissions from transport sources of nitrogen oxide and particulates have fallen by at least one third.
