Richmond-upon-Thames in Surrey has announced plans to run its 200-strong mixed van and truck fleet on recycled cooking oil by the summer of 2007. Richmond says it will be the first local authority to run its entire fleet on the fuel.
In a press release, Richmond Council says that despite successful trials, the cost of the fuel was initially thought to be prohibitive. However, the project has now become financially feasible due to recent increases in oil prices. Tenders are now being drawn up with a view to launching the initiative in the summer.
The Council claims that around 300 tonnes of CO2 per year will be saved by running its 200 vehicles on this form of biodiesel.
