Richmond-upon-Thames Council in SW London is to go ahead with a scheme that will raise the annual costs of parking a high carbon car in the borough by three times current rates.

The Liberal Democrat-controlled Council will charge for permits for parking vehicles based on their carbon dioxide emissions.

Richmond Council said that 49% of residents were in favour of the scheme, while 39% were opposed. 64% of respondents said the plans would make them think about changing their vehicle to a less-polluting model .

The Council said that annual parking charges of up to £300 for the highest carbon vehicles could be in place within three months.

Other London Councils are reported to be considering implementing similar schemes.
