Researchers to monitor driving standards and effect on environment

The Leeds Institute of Transport Studies have constructed an ‘instrumented car’ incorporating high-tech monitoring equipment to record how the way people drive influences the amount of pollution their car produces.

The car, an adapted Ford Mondeo, is equipped with a large array of sensors throughout the vehicle, including in the brakes, accelerator, clutch, steering and gears. It also includes instrumentation to monitor exhaust emissions second-by-second.

The car is already being used in EU, DfT and EPSRC-funded projects
