Report: transport best practice measures can reduce congestion, pollution

Mon 08 March 2004 View all news

A new report for the Department for Transport outlines the potential for non-technical transport policy measures like travel planning, car clubs and sharing schemes and tele-working to reduce congestion and pollution.

Under a 'high intensity' scenario in which there is a realistic but significant expansion and widespread implementation of present good practice, nationwide traffic levels could be reduced by 11%. Most helpfully, this could include a 21% reduction in peak period urban traffic.

A 'low intensity' scenario, under which best practice measures are not given increased policy priority, would lead to a nationwide traffic reduction of only 2-3%.
