RAC Foundation report proposes a 'Boris bike' scheme for cars

A new report published by the RAC Foundation says that the success of the Boris bike scheme in London could pave the way for the introduction of one-way car clubs based on the same idea. A similar scheme - Autolib - in Paris already offers more than 1,700 cars at 250 locations across the city. A Birmingham-based project - car2go - aims to replicate the idea from later this year.

The report - Car Rental 2.0 - has been written by Scott Le Vine of Imperial College. It suggests that a one-way rental scheme could have a potential market of 1.6 million people in the capital alone. This type of model would allow people to pick up a car in one place and drop it off elsewhere.

Electric cars are particularly well suited to urban car rental schemes which could provide a promising route for increasing the market share of EVs. The cars used by the Autolib scheme in Paris are all electric.
