Better Place, the US-based initiative undertaking a large scale electric vehicle recharging and battery swap project in Israel, has announced plans to build battery exchange stations in Japan as part of a state-led project to encourage the uptake of electric cars.

Early this year, Better Place, announced a privately funded plan to provide half a million recharging points and battery-swap stations for electric cars in Israel as part of a deal with Renault and Nissan who have undertaken to develop an electric car with a range of more than 100 miles and to mass-produce it from 2011.

The Japan project also includes the local car maker Subaru.  The project is scheduled to begin in January 2009 and last three to six months with the first demonstration battery-exchange facility to be built in Yokohama.

Founded in 2007, Better Place, which is based in Palo Alto, California, is building electric vehicle networks with partners in Israel, Denmark, Australia and the U.S.

In a separate announcement, Better Place announced that it is joining The Climate Group; a global network set up to help accelerate the decarbonisation of societies around the World.

Shai Agassi, founder and CEO of Better Place, said, “Countries increasingly realize that we’re overdue in moving beyond the high carbon Car 1.0 model, built on the internal combustion engine. It’s time to move to the Car 2.0 model of electric cars powered by renewable energy, and we want to make them more appealing for consumers.”
