Patrick McLoughlin named as Transport Secretary in Government reshuffle

Patrick McLoughlin has become the eighth Secretary of State for Transport in eight years, replacing Justine Greening who held the position for just under a year. In a comprehensive reshuffle of Conservative ministers in the Department for Transport, Simon Burns and Stephen Hammond replace Theresa Villiers and Mike Penning. Norman Baker, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Under-Secretary retains responsibility for environmental aspects of transport. In the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Michael Fallon takes responsibility for the low carbon economy and low emission vehicles. 

The Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin, MP for Derbyshire Dales, has overall responsiblity for climate change in the Department for Transport.

Mr McLoughlin worked for five years in agriculture, before following his father and grandfather – both coal miners – and going to work underground at the Littleton Colliery in Cannock.

He was elected MP for West Derbyshire in 1986 and was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Transport from 1989 to 1992. He became Chief Whip in May 2010. He assumes overall responsibility for transport strategy, including economic growth and climate change, transport security and high speed rail strategy.

Michael Fallon replaces Mark Prisk at BIS becoming Minister for Business and Enterprise, taking ownership for automotive aspects of the low carbon economy amongst other responsibilities. Mr Fallon has been MP for Sevenoaks, Kent, since 1997. Previously, he was MP for Darlington from 1983 to 1992. He was a minister in the Department for Education and Science in 1990. More recently he has held positions on the Treasury Select Committee and as deputy chairman of the Conservative Party.

Born in Scotland and married with two children, Michael was educated at Epsom College and St Andrews University.

Michael is a former director of Quality Care Homes plc (nursing homes), Just Learning LTD (nurseries) and Attendo AB (Scandinavian social and health care). He is currently non-executive director of Tullett Prebon plc (inter-dealing broking).
