Ninety new hybrid buses for London

Ninety new hybrid buses will be deployed in London during 2011 in some of central London's air quality hotspots (including Marylebone Road and Edgware Road) as part of efforts to improve the capital's air pollution and reduce carbon emissions.

The funding for the latest hybrid buses has come from the Department for Transport's Green Bus Fund in the establishment of which the LowCVP played a central advisory role (see related story). It brings the total number of hybrid buses in TfL's fleet to over 200. Under the Green Bus Fund, TfL was awarded £5m in 2009, and a further £8m in 2010.

TfL says the hybrid buses funded by the scheme emit around a third less greenhouse gas than diesel buses and use around a third less fuel.

The 90 buses will be divided between the following operators: 20 to Arriva; 13 to Abellio; 31 to Go Ahead; 26 to Metroline.
