Next generation vehicle emission standards announced

The European Commission issued formal proposals for next generation EU vehicle emission standards in December. The plan for “Euro 5” norms is backed by draft legislation requiring one-quarter of public spending on vehicles such as buses to be directed to “clean vehicles”.

After being delayed for further consultation, the Euro V emission limits have ended up in line with a draft version issued by the commission in July. The EU executive stressed that the new limits would reduce key pollutants in fine particle emissions from vans by up to 90%. The new standards are expected to come into force in 2008.

For diesel cars, the limit for ten micron particles (PM10) will be 5mg/km, compared with 25mg/km under Euro 4. All diesel cars will have to be fitted with particle filters to meet the standard.
