The Prime Minister carried out a major Government reshuffle on May 5, following the local elections. There were changes in most of the departments with a stake in the low carbon transport agenda.

The new Environment Secretary is David Miliband who moves from his role as Minister for Communities and Local Government. Mr Miliband was formerly Head of the Prime Minister's Policy Unit. Elliot Morley is replaced as Defra's minister for Climate Change by Ian Pearson, who joins from the DTI and has a background in economic development.

The new Secretary of State for Transport is Douglas Alexander; Alistair Darling the former Transport Secretary moves to lead the DTI. Mr Alexander was formerly Minister of State for Europe.

Gillian Merron also joins the DfT ministerial team as Parliamentary Under-Secretary and will hold responsibility for climate change and green issues.

Margaret Hodge replaces Alun Michael as Minister of State for Industry and the Regions. Amongst other issues, Mrs Hodge is responsible for enterprise, growth and business investment and the strengthening of regional economies.

(Note that Margaret Hodge will now speak at the LowCVP annual conference on 15 June, replacing Alun Michael - see separate news item.)
