New initiative to develop lower carbon motor sports engine

Ricardo and Engine Developments Ltd ("Judd") are in the process of designing, building and bench testing a unique race engine conversion to diesel as part of a programme supported by the Energy Efficient Motorsport (EEMS) group.

The project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of operating a diesel combustion system in a light-weight race engine structure - something which has never been tried before.

The group hopes that the project will help the application to permit diesel entries to race series such as Le Mans.  Up to now all race diesels have been conversions from road car engines and are consequently too heavy to compete effectively against spark-ignition engines.  This new approach will run at lower pressures and higher speeds to preserve more of a light-weight "race culture" engine.

Ricardo would be pleased to discuss with oil companies or motor mannufacturers interested in participating in this engine development or using it for testing special fuels and lubricants.
