New car emissions fall in Europe, but below target rate

Sat 05 November 2005 View all news

Average European new car CO2 emissions fell 1.8% in 2004 to 160g/km according to provisional figures. However the fall is below the rate needed to reach the target agreed by ACEA with the European Commission of 140g/km by 2008.

To meet the target, a fall of over 3% per year is needed.

Ivan Hodac, ACEA secretary general told the Financial Times: “It is correct that more efforts will have to be made. The road ahead is difficult but there is absolutely no reason to conclude today that we will not reach the target.”

The growth in sales of diesel vehicles has helped reduce emissions of CO2 in recent years, but the rate of growth slowed in 2004. The FT reports that some manufacturers showed worsening efficiency last year.

ACEA is due to begin talks with the European Commission about a 2012 emissions target later this year.
