Lord Stern - author of the seminal 'Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change' (2006) is set to publish his new book, 'The Growth Story of the 21st Century: The Economics and Opportunity of Climate Action' which reframes climate policy as the foundation for future economic prosperity. The book builds on the groundbreaking 2006 Stern Review, reflecting on two decades of progress in technology, finance and global collaboration.
Stern argues that tackling climate change is not a cost to growth but its most powerful driver. He identifies six major forces that will underpin a new era of sustainable development: innovation in clean technologies, economies of scale in green infrastructure, improved resource efficiency, productivity gains across sectors, healthier populations and increased investment in low carbon assets. Together, these represent a transformation of the global economy, creating opportunities for investment, job creation and resilience.
The book warns that delay would impose steep economic and social costs, but that decisive action can generate inclusive growth and greater long-term stability. With rapid advances in renewable energy, battery technology and electrified transport, Stern suggests the tools for change are already available - what is needed now is scale, coordination and leadership.
For the transport and energy sectors, his message is particularly relevant. The transition to zero emission vehicles, clean logistics and integrated energy systems reflects exactly the kind of economic renewal Stern envisions. His new work reinforces the case for climate action as the growth engine of the 21st century.
