New book examines potential for lightweight, low carbon cars

A new publication - 'Cars Fit For Their Purpose: What they would be and how to achieve them' - examines how low carbon cars could soon be produced without major investment in technology. The book, by Stephen Plowden and Simon Lister, includes detailed and practical recommendations for introducing less powerful, lighter weight cars. It attempts to show how safety can be improved at the same time as improving fuel consumption and cutting CO2 emissions substantially.

Stephen Plowden - a leading transport economist - and Simon Lister - an experienced transport researcher and modeller - have calculated potential reductions in fuel consumption for different sizes of car, by comparing them with relatively low-polluting cars already on the European market. With compelling evidence that lighter weight, low carbon cars would reduce both the number and severity of injuries suffered by car drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians, the authors call for government intervention allowing the motor industry to make low carbon cars a reality.

The report is available through Local Transport Today priced at £25 (also other pricing options). For more information, please see the associated news link.
