A vehicle running around the world on natural gas - in a project dubbed the 'EcoFuel World Tour' - is to visit Manchester on May 2nd, having crossed five continents since starting the journey from Germany in October 2006.

A standard natural gas Volkswagen Caddy is being driven 45,000km around the world, powered only by compressed natural gas (CNG) that has been bought en route. The aim of the project is "to draw attention to the worldwide availability of natural gas as an environmentally friendly and low-priced fuel option and highlighting the growing use of CNG vehicles in more than 30 countries worldwide".

In addition to Volkswagen, the project's sponsors include OMV Gas International, Michelin, Panasonic and Manchester-based fluid systems components maker Swagelok.

The Volkswagen Caddy and drive team have already travelled through Asia, Australia, North and South America  and Europe. The project website claims that running on natural gas around the world has saved over 3,000 Euros in fuel costs.
