Fiat has the revealed the results of a large scale trial of its eco:Drive technology which show average efficiency gains of 6% across nearly 6,000 users of the system which has been introduced to encourage ecodriving. Fiat says it has analysed data from 428,000 journeys made by 5,700 drivers across five different countries, including the UK.

Fiat says that the trials also show that the top 10% of participating drivers improved their fuel economy and cut CO2 emissions by 16%.

Fiat’s system, eco:Drive. is an interactive, personalised tool that makes use of Fiat’s in-car infotainment system. Plugging a USB key into the dashboard allows eco:Drive to record information about driving style. When the USB is plugged into a computer it shows how the driver has performed, how s/he can improve, and also track the fuel and CO2 savings made. With eco:Drive, Fiat says, it wanted to show drivers exactly how they can drive more efficiently and what effect that has on their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Fiat says that if the improvement in ecodriving performance were maintained for the full lifetime of the vehicle, a driver making a 6% saving would cut their fuel costs by nearly £500 and CO2 emissions by over 1,000kg.
