MPs and NGOs call for climate change targets backed by law

Sun 17 July 2005 View all news

A coalition of MPs and NGOs is calling for the setting of year-on-year targets for greenhouse gas reductions to be enforced by a legal framework. The coalition believes that this is the only way that the 2050 goal of a 60% cut in CO2 emissions will be achieved.

The proposed new law would set a legally binding target to reduce emissions by three per cent every year and would require the Prime Minister to make an annual report to Parliament on progress towards meeting the target. There would also be increased powers for Select Committees and requirements for ministers to bring in responsive policies.

The coalition includes Michael Meacher and John Gummer - both former environment ministers - and the LibDems environment spokesman Norman Baker, among more than 200 MPs and NGOs such as WWF, Friends of the Earth, Christian Aid and Help the Aged.
